Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

5 out of 5 stars Sunk it's teeth into me....   November 17, 2008
I'm a 41 yr old woman, who cut her teeth on Anne Rice. Upon opening page one of this book at the bookstore, it grabbed me. I immediately liked Zoey and wanted to know more about her. The writing style was friendly and spoke comfortabley TO the reader. Reminded me of Richard Peck's writing style from some of his teen mystery novels (my favorite as a teen).

It's a light read yet draws you into a different world of Vampyres than the normal fare. Love the Night School concept as well.

I DO wish there was a picture of Zoey's forehead tattoo/Mark, though. It sounds so exotic!

So, I had to get this book and Twilight. Both are really good so far.

I'll update once I finish, but I'm sure I'll be getting the sequels to both books!

3 out of 5 stars marked   November 15, 2008
I must admit that it took me awhile to get into "Marked." This book sat on my nighstand for over a year, while I slowly read through the first third of the book. Around page 50, things start to pick up when Zooey actually arrives at the House of Night, which is likened to a vampire finishing school. The idea of a vampire finishing school is a good one & has been used in more than one YA vampire series. I personally feel that Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series is much better & would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed this book.

But "Marked" was just a little too predictable & the characters a little too cliche. We have the token male, gay friend, the country bumpkin roommate, the blonde mean girl, & the popular, gorgeous guy that all the girls have a crush on. The heroine is the typical unpopular, new girl who ends up going against the most popular girl in school. The results are predictable.

Despite all of this, "Marked" was a guilty pleasure, & the end left some threads hanging that could be promising in the future. I'm going to chalk this book up to a rough start & read "Betrayed." The storyline of the second books seems much more promising.

The grammar is jumbled. The plot is silly. The characters are cliche. This book is a waste of time. Put it down.

5 out of 5 stars this series is made of AWESOME!   November 9, 2008

I found this story line to be very origional, unlike anything I've ever read. I would recommend this for teens, probably 14 and older.

The book is written from a teen's perspective, which is refreshing. That means that there are quite a few curse words and seual comments... let's just leave it at that.

It always keeps you on the edge of your seat, even in the pretty uneventful parts. I know that a book is really good when I find myself reading it and laughing out loud.

As I said, it is a very "teen" book. So if you're not a teen, someone may have to explain to you what some of the, uh..., references in the book mean.

But overall, I found this book to be absolutely AMAZING. My friend ordered Marked, not knowing if it would be all that good, and before I was even half way through the book, I was online ordering Betrayed, Chosen, and Untamed. I would recommend these books to just about anybody. It's a new twist on an old tale.

5 out of 5 stars Marked was right up there with the Twilight saga for me   November 7, 2008

I was having a hard time finding a book I could get into after reading the Twilight saga when I happened along the House of Night series. I thought oh what the heck I will give it a try. And believe it or not I couldnt put the books. I got my sister and a couple of her co-workers to read them ( they had also read the Twilight saga). Now I am wanting for the next one to come out (March 2009). I would totally recommend these books to anyone that love the Twilight saga.
