1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER   January 2, 2009
I have never had a printer that performed this poorly. The photo quality is terrible, it stops working after 4-5 prints, and it jams on everything. I think I'm going to take it outside with a baseball bat and give it the "Office Space" treatment. Buy an Epson.

1 out of 5 stars NON STOP PAPER JAM   December 29, 2008
My father bought this printer and it only lasted a few short runs. 8.5x11 paper constantly jams in the feeder. Stay away from this one - it doesn't seem to be good for regular use at home.

If only Canon would be kind enough to help.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile and user friendly SW   December 28, 2008
I have been using this printer for more than a year now and thought about writing a review only today.

There are many things going for this printer.

1. Very useful and user friendly bundled Software with the printer. This makes all the difference as most of the time we tend to talk to the SW more than the printer itself. All the apps bundled with the printer for Scanning, printing, pictures etc are all intuitive and easy to use. Other printer related settings and warnings are clear and understandable

2. Quality of pictures is excellent with faithful reproduction of all the original colors from the actual picture. I havent seen any distortions so far

3. general quality of printing papers in B/w and color is very good although i had felt it could be slightly better

Cons.

1. Yes a little noisy (as others have noted in their reviews)
2. costly cartridge replacements. (esp the color one)

Overall good value for money.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate.   December 21, 2008

My biggest problems with this printer/scanner/copier involve the scanning and the software.

1) The scanner will not scan the entire bed of the scanner, and I find that a laughably bad design. If you plan to place documents against the edge to ensure they are lined up properly the trade off will be that at least 1/2" of the image will not be scanned. To get around this you must place things well within the bounds of the scanner bed, eyeball it, and hope for the best.

2) The software attempts to be decent, but it has serious design flaws. First of all, even though the tool is obviously storing temporary copies of the raw scanner image somewhere, this information is lost if the application crashes. Since there's no way to save your current state it should be able to restore itself after the application shuts down and is restarted (if you've used Firefox then your familiar with that app's ability to restore itself after a crash)

The software will not allow you to save a file with a name longer than 32 characters for no good reason whatsoever. I always bump into this limit and must name the file twice by using Windows Explorer.

On the hardware side of things, I like how the device can close itself up at every point (paper input, paper output) so that you can help prevent debris and dust from settling inside it.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Photo Printing   December 14, 2008

Canon cameras are generally high quality, I was surprised at how poorly the MP470 prints photos. Prints look NOTHING like the original Jpegs. Colors are either the wrong hue, washed out or over saturated and blotchy, and the 'tweeking' setting are impossible to judge until you print out test photo after test photo, wasting paper and ink over and over to tweek it right. Also, when you first turn it on, it takes 'forever' to get ready and print, even just a letter. The mechanism goes back and forth, back and forth, whirring away for several minutes.
I realize it's a low end printer, but Canon is a PHOTO company, it should be concerned about how it's printers PRINT PHOTOS. Their reputation is high quality photo products - the MP470 is NOT.
